A Sustainable and Circular Renovation to Revitalize the Neighborhood

This renovation and transformation project, located at 1-3-5-7 Rue Georges Ugeux in Uccle, is set in a residential area, the Cité Jardin du Melkriek, at the entrance to the neighborhood. It stands out for its ambition to revitalize this urban space by transforming a building into a collective and functional living space.
The project features a ground floor dedicated to collective activities, with a commercial space facing the street and an association hub next to the sports field, promoting social diversity. The building also offers seven studio and one-bedroom apartments, two of which are accessible to people with reduced mobility (PMR). The addition of four apartments in the roof space, built with a lightweight wooden structure, highlights the project’s flexibility and sustainability. The roof is made from reclaimed tiles, which will be stored and reused in the neighborhood for other roof repairs.
Architecturally, the design combines modern and traditional materials: the façade is made of large windows, a terracotta-colored textured plaster base, and rectangular slate cladding on the upper floors. This aesthetic is contemporary while blending seamlessly with the architectural landscape of the neighborhood.
Accessibility is central to the project, with distinct entrances for the commercial space, association hub, and residences, all accessible to people with reduced mobility. An outdoor garden at the back of the building is planned for residents and will encourage interaction between them and the broader community.
An environmentally conscious approach is also emphasized with the use of natural and recycled materials, such as wood fiber insulation, and the optimization of facilities, including photovoltaic panels and a rainwater harvesting system to supply water to the association’s sanitary facilities.
This project was the winner of the 2022 RENOLAB project call, which supports the sustainable and circular renovation of Brussels' architectural heritage. This recognition underscores the quality of the project’s approach, blending modernity, sustainability, and integration into its environment.
